Ice Hotels

This hotel sits inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park with the fells at the door. Through the snow months it is a ski and northern-lights house: trails leave from the building itself, the drying room is full of wet gear, and the restaurant works to a room that arrives together and leaves together.

A second season follows in the light half of the year, when walkers take over the same trails, and there is a real pause between the two. In those weeks the ground is neither snow nor summer, the park is at its emptiest, and the house steps back from the pace of both halves.

The pause is short and it is used. Rooms are refitted, the equipment that spent a winter outdoors is repaired, and the trails around the building are cleared of whatever the melt brought down before the walking season starts.

Ask what the roads and the trails are doing, because the weeks between seasons are unreliable.

The lodge stands by a lake in the forest a half-hour out of Rovaniemi, and its loud half is the snow. Through those months the building fills with people coming in off the trail: outdoor layers drying, a restaurant that fills after dark, and a lobby that empties at once when a northern-lights forecast turns good.

When the snow goes, the crowd goes with it. The road out carries far less traffic, the forest tracks turn to mud and then to open ground, and the lodge sees a fraction of the people it held a few weeks earlier. That thinning is the clearest thing about the year here.

The quiet weeks are when the winter is repaired. Sleds, boots and outdoor kit are checked or replaced, rooms are made good after months of heavy use, and fabric that takes deep cold every year is repaired while it is warm enough to work.

Ask which services and transfers are running, since a forest lodge is not a town address.

Hetta is a small place a long way north, and the guesthouse there is a family concern rather than a resort. In the snow months it takes skiers, reindeer-race visitors and people up for the lights, and the dining room is the social centre of the building rather than a separate operation.

Then the north empties out. Once the season ends the village keeps to itself, traffic on the road drops away, and the guesthouse works with far fewer beds occupied. The difference is hard to overstate: the same building can be full one week and close to its own household the next.

For a small hotel that shift is the only chance to do anything at all. Rooms are painted, the sauna and the kitchen are overhauled, and the family gets through the list of jobs that cannot start while guests are crossing the hall.

Äkäslompolo lies at the foot of Ylläs, and this hotel runs on the ski season the fell provides. Through those months the building works to the lifts: early breakfasts, a drying room that never quite dries, and evenings in the restaurant with the whole house back indoors at the same hour.

After the season the fell goes green and the village becomes very quiet. The lifts stop, most of the traffic disappears, and the hotel sees a fraction of the people it held a month before. Some parts of the building are simply not opened, and the village list of what is running gets much shorter.

That gap is when the ski year is undone. Rental gear is stripped and serviced, rooms that took a full winter of boots and wet clothing are repaired, and the outside of the building is treated before the next cold arrives.
